Scary New Phone Scam Reported by PVPD

1/23/24

Phone scams have taken a terrifying turn. The Prescott Valley Police Department reports a local resident informed them he received a call from someone claiming to have kidnapped his wife. The caller told him not to call the police or he would kill the wife, and a woman could be heard screaming in the background. The man did call the police, who confirmed his wife was safe. The scammer then hung up.

The Prescott Valley Police Department is urging all residents that if they find themselves in a similar situation, take a moment to think instead of acting out of fear. Find some way to contact the “kidnapped” loved one and verify that they are safe before sending money to anyone. Police say when a suspect’s scam is successful, they become emboldened to victimize someone else.
