A Saturday hiking trip on the Pyramid Trail in Sedona turned deadly for a man from North Berwick, Maine.

According to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, just before 1 p.m. deputies responded to a report of a 79-year-old man who fell while hiking Pyramid Trail. Sedona Fire Department personnel were already on the scene where they found the hiker, who apparently slipped and fell from the trail approximately 30-35 feet while hiking with his wife.

Multiple witnesses reported the man was seen struggling on the hike and was asked if he needed help. He told passers-by that he was fine, but minutes later slipped and fell. During his fall down the steep embankment, he hit his head multiple times. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The death was ruled accidental.
