AZGFD Reports No Wasting Disease in Deer and Elk

3/7/24

Good news for hunters in the Tri-City area. The Arizona Game and Fish Department reports no evidence of chronic wasting disease has been found in Arizona’s elk and deer population. More than 1,200 animals were tested for the fatal disease, which affects the nervous system. The samples were obtained from hunters, taxidermists, and roadkill animals.

Game and Fish has been testing for chronic wasting disease in deer and elk since 1998. While there have been cases discovered in Utah, New Mexico, and Colorado, no cases have been detected in Arizona.
