Rattlesnake Season is Here

As temperatures climb, rattlesnake season is officially underway across Yavapai County and many other areas of the state. Wildlife experts are reminding folks to stay alert from now through early fall, as snakes become more active in warmer weather.

Rattlesnakes typically emerge when it’s about 60 degrees or warmer, and you’ll most often spot them sunning on rocks, slithering across roads, or hiding in tall grass and brush. During the hotter months, they tend to be more active in the early morning and evenings, or even at night.

To stay safe, watch your step when walking outdoors, stick to clear paths, and avoid reaching into holes, wood piles, or under debris. Wear boots and long pants if you’re working in the field, and keep pets on a leash while out walking.

If you hear a rattle, freeze, locate the snake, and back away slowly. In the rare case of a bite, stay calm, call 911, and avoid old-school remedies like sucking out the venom or using a tourniquet.
