ADOT has opened a new truck parking lot at the Sunset Point rest area off I-17. This is to meet the growing demand for commercial parking.
The new lot adds 19 truck spaces to the existing 27, which are often near capacity. The project, which costs $4.1 million, also includes waterless toilets and covered ramadas.
Instead of asphalt, ADOT used a gravel-and-grid system that cut costs in half and allows for more parking space by eliminating the need for water retention.
Sunset Point is one of several rest areas targeted for expansion under a statewide plan to build hundreds of new truck parking spaces at high-demand locations. Four other rest areas, including two near Flagstaff, are expected to open with added truck parking this year.
