This Day in Sports History, February 17th

1974: Back-to-back for this guy. Richard Petty was the winner in the Daytona 500. That made him the first NASCAR driver to win back-to-back 500s.

1993: Two milestones in one game. Hartford’s Pat Verbeek recorded his 300th career goal and 300th career assist in the same game. Still, the Whalers lost to Buffalo 5-3.

1998: They got their first one. The U.S. women’s hockey team topped Canada 3-1. That gave the American women their first gold medal.

Who’s celebrating a birthday in the sports world today? How about former New England Patriots receiver Stanley Morgan, who’s 71. Ex-San Francisco 49ers guard Guy McIntyre is 65. Chicago Bulls Hall of Fame shooting guard Michael Jordan is 63. Los Angeles Kings Hall of Fame winger Luc Robitaille is 60. Ex-Tampa Bay Lightning center Vaclav Prospal is 51, and former Indiana Pacers power forward Al Harrington is 46.
