This Day in Sports History, February 19th

1970: Baseball’s best pitcher got punished. Two-time American League Cy Young winner Denny McLain was suspended by MLB for gambling. Two years later, he was out of baseball at the age of 28.

1995: Back-to-back victories. Sterling Marlin won his second straight Daytona 500. That made him the third NASCAR driver to win consecutive 500s.

2019: He snagged MLB’s biggest free agent contract. Manny Machado signed a ten-year, $300 deal with San Diego. Since that time, he’s had 194 homers, 631 R-B-Is, and three All-Star selections for the Padres.

Happy birthday today to . . . Minnesota Vikings Hall of Fame safety Paul Krause, who’s 84. Former Oakland A’s pitcher Dave Stewart is 69. Indianapolis Colts Hall of Fame defensive end Dwight Freeney is 46, and Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic is 31.
