Arizona State Parks and Trails acquired property in Chino Valley at the headwaters of the Verde River in 2024 to create a new state park. Town officials announced plans are moving forward for the park and a naming competition will be held. They say involving community members serves as an opportunity to add to the park’s story and help visitors understand what makes the area so special.
The property includes 750 acres on the east side of State Route 89. Town officials say the project aims to protect Sullivan Lake at the head of the Verde River, protect the history of Del Rio Springs, and extend the Peavine Trail from Watson Lake to the river’s headwaters.
Submissions for naming the park will be accepted until March 31st, at which point the State Parks Board will review the submissions and select a winner.
