This Day in Sports History, March 2nd

1962: He hit the century mark. Philadelphia’s Wilt Chamberlain notched 100 points in a single game. That helped the Warriors beat the Knicks 169–147.

1980: His streak came to an end. Phoenix’s Mike Bratz free throw streak was halted at 57 in a row. He did go 3-for-4 from the stripe and tallied seven points in the Suns’ 123–115 win over the Lakers.

1993: He got more than any other first-year player. Winnipeg’s Teemu Selanne had a hat trick and broke the record for most goals in a season by a rookie with 53. The original mark was set by Mike Bossy.

Happy birthday today to . . . former Oakland A’s catcher Terry Steinbach, who’s 64. Ex-Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and New York Rangers Hall of Fame goalie Henrik Lundqvist are both 44, and Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is 28.
