This Day in Sports History, March 23rd

1946: Two in a row for the Cowboys. Oklahoma State bested North Carolina 43-40 to win their second straight men’s basketball national championship. Bob Kurland was the Cowboys’ top scorer with 23 points.

1957: It took a long time to decide a winner. North Carolina and Kansas went into triple-overtime in the men’s basketball national championship game. When all was said and done, the Tar Heels edged out the Jayhawks 54-53.

1993: It was basket-brawl in the desert. After a couple of heated exchanges between the two sides, the Phoenix Suns and the New York Knicks engaged in a massive fight. Four players from New York and two from Phoenix were ejected.

Phoenix Suns Hall of Fame shooting guard Jason Kidd is 53. Former Chicago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle is 47. Ex–Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew is 41, and Dallas Mavericks shooting guard Kyrie Irving is 34.
