State, City of Prescott Mulling Over Future of Badger Mt

The planned state auction of Badger Mountain has been called off — but the future of one of Prescott’s most recognizable landmarks is far from settled.

The Arizona State Land Department had scheduled Badger Mountain, or P Mountain, for auction this Thursday. The auction has since been cancelled after Prescott area State Senator Mark Finchem called for a new and extended public comment period. Governor Katie Hobbs notified Prescott Mayor Cathey Rusing of the cancellation.

The original 30-day comment window under state law closed February 8th — before many residents and advocacy groups say they were aware the auction was even scheduled.

Mayor Rusing has since sent a letter to the state expressing interest in a long-term lease of the land, which could preserve public access while the city pursues a possible purchase.

Conservation advocates are warning the auction could be revived once any new comment period concludes.
