1963: A legend returns to the Big Apple. The New York Mets purchased the contract of Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Duke Snider. The future Hall of Famer went on to hit .243 with 14 home runs and 45 RBIs and represented the Mets in the ’63 All-Star Game.
1985: The underdog got the big trophy. Villanova outlasted Georgetown 66–64 to win the NCAA men’s basketball national championship. At number eight, ’Nova was the lowest-seeded team to win the title.
2001: They won it at the line. The Notre Dame women’s basketball team got by Purdue 68–66 to capture the national championship. Ruth Riley won it with two free throws in the final five seconds of regulation.
