This Day in Sports History, April 6th

April 6th:

1973: The debut of a new position. The Yankees’ Ron Blomberg stepped to the plate as the first designated hitter in Major League Baseball history. He walked in that first appearance.

2015: Another banner for the Blue Devils. Duke held off a late charge by Wisconsin to get the 68-63 win in the NCAA men’s basketball national championship game. That was the fifth title in Blue Devils’ history.

2025: A new all-time goal scorer. Washington’s Alex Ovechkin notched the 895th goal of his career. That surpassed the all-time record held by “The Great One” Wayne Gretzky.

Happy birthday today to . . . Minnesota Twins Hall of Fame pitcher Bert Blyleven, who’s 75. Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame receiver Sterling Sharpe is 61. Former Seattle Mariners second baseman Bret Boone is 57. Ex-Washington Capitals goalie Olaf Kolzig is 56, and Boston Bruins center Pavel Zacha is 29.
