Elderly Woman Dies in House Fire in Wilhoit

A fire at a home in Wilhoit claimed the life of a 79-year-old woman.

According to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, the fire broke out Saturday afternoon in a shed. The flames spread to nearby vegetation, then to the residence. Deputies report the woman had a physical handicap and was unable to escape. Several nearby residents had to be evacuated when the fire spread beyond the property, fueled by strong winds.

Seven different fire agencies battled the blaze. It appeared the shed had containers of butane, paint, and other flammable materials and fuels. Interviews with neighbors indicated the victim lived alone and appeared to have no family.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but YCSO does not suspect foul play.
