A bear captured by the Arizona Game and Fish Department Monday in Prescott Valley was killed when it escaped its container.
According to Game and Fish officials, the bear, which was about a year old, wandered through Robert’s Marketplace and made its way to a populated area along Glassford Hill Road. The bear was captured and Game and Fish planned to relocate it. However, on Tuesday morning, the bear chewed through its metal transport carrier and escaped into a neighborhood in Dewey.
Game and Fish officers deemed the bear a threat to public safety and euthanized it. Wildlife officials say this is the first time they can recall a bear breaking out of a transport carrier in such a manner.
