Wildfire Threatens Cordes Lakes

A vehicle fire on I-17 Friday turned into a wildfire that burned almost 230 acres near Cordes Lakes.

According to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office a vehicle caught fire around 4 p.m. The flames spread to nearby vegetation and pushed northward toward Cordes Lakes. A “Set” evacuation messages was sent out to residents in the area.

Personnel from the Mayer Fire District, Daisy Mountain Fire District, BLM, and the state battled the wildfire, aided by air tankers that dropped retardant to prevent the fire from spreading farther. Controlled burns were also used to battle the fire.

In the end, no evacuations were needed.
