Chino Valley & Mayer Football Teams Drop Season Openers

They took the field for real Friday night. Both the Chino Valley and Mayer football teams opened their 2024 seasons. The Cougars logged a whole lot of miles for week one as they went up to Page. While Chino did give the Sand Devils some spirited competition, Coach Ricky Herrera said the mistakes caught up to them and they lost 47-20.

Ben Sibole tossed two touchdown passes, one to Jeremiah Duplechain and the other to Levi Akans. Kai Holmes also had a rushing touchdown. Duplechain and Logan Zeger both recorded sacks.

Mayer, meanwhile, stayed home for its season opener against Williams. But it was a rough night for the Wildcats as they fell to the Vikings 44-0. The Mayer defense did record five fumble recoveries and three sacks.

This coming Friday, Chino Valley has its home opener versus Kingman Academy, while Mayer travels to Superior.
