Hurricanes Have Come Through Yavapai County

Hurricane Helene left a trail of destruction across the southeastern states, and Hurricane Milton is expected to be just as destructive. While hurricanes are associated more with the Gulf Coast and the Carolinas, it is not unheard of for them to reach Arizona, even as far north as Yavapai County.

One such storm in 1951 dumped 13 inches of rain on Crown King. In 1983, the remnants of Tropical Storm Octave resulted in 2.62 inches of rain falling on Prescott. The remnants of Hurricane Jimena in 2009 brought heavy rain to Prescott and Sedona and forced the closure of stretches of Highway 69 and 179 due to flooding.

But the effects of any hurricane or tropical storm that does reach Arizona are usually felt in the southern and central parts of the state.
