What are the chances of a major wildfire breaking out in Yavapai County this month? Greater than normal.
The National Interagency Fire Center in Idaho released a map showing areas of the United States that have an above normal risk of wildfires for October. For Arizona, Yavapai, Coconino, Mohave, and Maricopa counties all fall into the above normal range. Not surprisingly, northern and southern California are also on the list, along with parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Idaho, Wyoming, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
Everyone is urged to take precautions to reduce the chance of a wildfire. Make sure campfires are completely out and the ashes are cool to the touch before you leave. When driving, do not throw cigarettes out your window and make sure no chains are dragging from your vehicle, as they can throw out sparks. It’s also a good idea to clear excess vegetation from your property to create defensible space around your home.
