Prescott Nat’l Forest Implements Bald Eagle Nesting Closures in Two Locations

Trail closures to protect bald eagles from human disturbance during their nesting season will begin on December first.

Near Lynx Lake, the John’s Tank Trail #94 will be closed, while the Lynx Lake Shore Trail #311 and Salida Gulch Trail #95 will remain open. This closure is a seasonal measure in effect each year from December 1st through June 30th. The closure applies to approximately one mile of the John’s Tank Trail east of Lynx Lake, which connects the Lynx Lake Shore Trail to the Salida Gulch Trail. The closure also extends north and south of the trail between Lynx Lake and the Salida Gulch Trail. Maps of the closure area will be posted at all trailheads and the Bradshaw Ranger District Office.

Additionally, the Forest Service will close the Ladder’s Bald Eagle Breeding Area along the Verde River to the public on December 1st. This area, located south of Camp Verde on the Prescott National Forest, includes a two-mile section of the Verde River and adjacent National Forest lands near the “Verde Falls. River rafters may pass through the closure area but are restricted from stopping, taking out watercraft, or delaying their passage except for scouting rapids or emergencies. Signs marking the closure boundaries are posted along the river.

All recreational uses in the closure area, including hunting, fishing, and hiking, are prohibited during the closure period. Drone operators are also asked to avoid the area completely. The breeding area will be monitored regularly by the Arizona Game and Fish Department.
