The Prescott Fire Department wants to raise awareness about the importance of safety in our community during Community Risk Reduction Week.
Cooking fires are one of the most common causes of home fires. Follow these tips to keep your kitchen and home safe:
- Always stay in the kitchen when cooking, especially when frying, grilling, or broiling. If you need to leave the room, turn off the stove.
- Keep a lid nearby to smother small grease fires. Never use water on a grease fire—it can spread the flames! Have a working fire extinguisher in the kitchen and know how to use it.
- Keep flammable items like oven mitts, dish towels, and paper products away from the stovetop. Turn pot handles inward to avoid accidental spills or knocks.
- For small fires, cover them with a lid or use an extinguisher. If the fire grows, get out immediately and call 911.
