Three women with ties to Prescott are currently in charge of basketball teams at the D-1 level.
Becky Burke is the current bench boss for the University of Buffalo, who have a record of 19-4. She has been in charge of the Lady Bulls since 2022. Back in 2015, Burke was hired as the first-ever head coach for the Embry-Riddle women’s basketball team. She spent two years there before getting head coaching stints with the University of Charleston and South Carolina Upstate.
A pair of Yavapai College grads are also head coaches. Katie Schrader, now Katie Bruce, holds the reins of Indiana University-Indianapolis. She’s been their head coach since 2022 following a successful stint at Walsh University where she became the program’s all-time winningest coach and led them to four straight NCAA tournament berths.
Schrader’s former YC teammate, Chelsea Dermyer – now Banbury – has been coaching High Point University since 2019. The Lady Panthers are currently 13-11 on the season. She had been an assistant coach at Florida Gulf Coast for eleven years before coming to High Point.
