Former PPD Officer Indicted for Manslaughter

A former Prescott police officer has been indicted by a Yavapai County grand jury on manslaughter charges. The indictment was made Wednesday against Brian Sutton, who surrendered to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Prescott Police, on June 8 of last year, Sutton was one of two officers who responded to a residence on Sycamore Drive to arrest 34-year-old Daniel Leslie, who was involved in a domestic violence incident the day before. Leslie was in the driveway when officers arrived and was ordered to surrender. He then started to run inside the home. That’s when Sutton fired his handgun three times at Leslie, striking him.

Leslie was flown to a Phoenix-area hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The Arizona Department of Public Safety’s investigation determined Leslie was not armed when he was shot.
