The Yavapai County Office of Emergency Management is urging everyone to take part in the Great ShakeOut earthquake drill on Thursday, October 16th, at 10:16 a.m.
Although many Arizonans think earthquakes aren’t a local threat, the state has more than 100 active faults and experiences hundreds of small quakes each year.
Right here in Yavapai County, major faults like the Big Chino and Verde faults present a real risk. The Verde Fault could produce a quake as strong as magnitude 7—enough to cause serious damage.
Emergency Manager Ashley Ahlquist says the drill is a chance to practice life-saving actions before disaster strikes.
At exactly 10:16, participants are asked to drop, cover, and hold on—a simple drill that builds muscle memory and readiness.
