Prescott area Congressman Eli Crane and Texas Senator Ted Cruz are pushing for tougher voter registration rules. They’ve signed a letter backing a petition that urges the Federal Election Assistance Commission to require proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration in federal elections.
Right now, the national mail voter form only requires applicants to check a box attesting citizenship under penalty of perjury.
Crane says the change is a “common sense safeguard” to protect election integrity, noting citizens already show ID to drive, fly, or open a bank account.
If approved, the reforms would add a layer of documentation to help verify citizenship before registering to vote.
