The first is to have your furnace inspected and serviced. You should also make sure your chimney is clean, and the fireplace screen is in good condition. When it comes to disposing of fireplace ashes, make sure they are in a covered metal container. Portable space heaters should be plugged directly into a wall outlet and kept at least three feet from anything flammable. You should also test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
