This Day in Sports History, January 20th

1952: An offensive outburst by the NBA’s original superstar. George Mikan posted 61 points for Minneapolis in its game versus Rochester. That helped the Lakers top the Royals 91–81 in double overtime.

1968: The streak ended. Houston overpowered UCLA 71–69 to end the Bruins’ 47-game winning streak. It became known as college basketball’s “Game of the Century.”

1980: No Summer Games for America. President Jimmy Carter announced the U.S. would boycott the Summer Olympics in Moscow. The move was a response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

Happy birthday today to former Minnesota Twins pitcher Camilio Pascual, who’s 92. Detroit Pistons Hall of Fame small forward Bailey Howell is 89. Former Chicago White Sox shortstop Ozzie Guillen is 62, and ex-Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Jeremiah Trotter is 49.
