1979: Minnesota sent one of its greatest players packing. The Twins traded future Hall of Famer Rod Carew to the Angels for four players. In seven seasons with California, he was a six-time All-Star and collected the 3,000th hit of his career.
1993: She got punished for her words. Cincinnati Reds owner Marge Schott was suspended for one year for racist comments. Many of those comments were directed toward Black players on her team, as well as Jewish people.
2008: A great catch that led to a win. David Tyree caught an Eli Manning pass against his helmet in the fourth quarter to keep the drive going. Three plays later, Plaxico Burress caught what would be the game-winning touchdown as the Giants topped the Patriots 17–14 in Super Bowl XLII.
Who’s celebrating a birthday in the sports world today? How about Minnesota Vikings Hall of Fame quarterback Fran Tarkenton, who’s 86. Miami Dolphins Hall of Fame quarterback Bob Griese is 81. Former Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Bake McBride is 77. Ex–Boston Red Sox outfielder Fred Lynn is 74. Former Toronto Maple Leafs enforcer Tiger Williams is 72, and Los Angeles Lakers Hall of Fame center Vlade Divac is 58.
