This Day in Sports History, February 4th

1969: A new head guy for Oakland. The Raiders hired John Madden as their head coach. During his ten seasons at the helm, he led the team to six appearances in the AFC Championship Game and the win in Super Bowl XI.

1991: They slammed the door on Charlie Hustle. The Hall of Fame board of directors voted 12–0 to bar Pete Rose from Cooperstown. This was punishment for his gambling while manager of the Cincinnati Reds.

2018: The Birds finally got one. Philadelphia outlasted New England 41–33 in Super Bowl LII. It was the first Super Bowl title for the Eagles.

Birthdays in the sports world today… New York Giants Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor is 67. Chicago Blackhawks Hall of Fame center Denis Savard is 65. Former Milwaukee Brewers closer Dan Plesac is 64, and Sacramento Kings shooting guard Malik Monk is 28.
