Prescott police and city officials are reminding residents about the balance between First Amendment rights and public safety following recent public demonstrations around the Courthouse Square.
In coordinated statements, the Prescott Police Department and the City of Prescott say they fully support the constitutional rights to free speech, press, assembly, and petition.
At the same time, both emphasize that participants have a responsibility to obey Arizona law, Yavapai County ordinances, and Prescott city codes, and to respect the rights of others.
Officials say demonstrators must not block sidewalks, roadways, or intersections; interfere with traffic; use external noise-making devices that disrupt the public; throw objects; or engage in disorderly conduct, assault, or other unlawful behavior.
Police say they will maintain a presence at public assemblies to protect safety and ensure peace. Any violations of state or local law may result in enforcement action and criminal charges.
