This Day in Sports History, February 27th

1959: He was a big help to his teammates. Boston’s Bob Cousy dished out an NBA record 28 assists. He also notched 31 points to help the Celtics vanquish the Minneapolis Lakers 173–139.

1973: He got rewarded big time. On the heels of his MVP season, Dick Allen signed a three-year, $750,000 contract with the Chicago White Sox. A broken leg, however, limited him to 72 games that season.

1987: They got the NCAA death sentence. SMU had its entire football season canceled due to gross rules violations. Much of the scandal involved recruiters paying players.

Time to wish a happy birthday today to . . . Baltimore Colts Hall of Fame receiver Raymond Berry, who’s 93. Los Angeles Lakers Hall of Fame small forward James Worthy is 65, and Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez is 50.
