This Day in Sports History, March 9th

1974: A super-exciting title game. NC State bested Maryland 103–100 in overtime to win the ACC championship. Many have dubbed this the greatest college basketball game ever played.

1984: They denied them so many times. Philadelphia set an NBA record for most blocks in a game with 20 in its 92–84 win over Seattle. The Sixers were led by “Dr. J” Julius Erving and Clemon Johnson, who both had five blocks.

1995: Florida gets another MLB team. The league awarded Tampa Bay a franchise, to be named the Devil Rays. They would play their first game in 1998.
