This Day in Sports History, March 19th

1966: A championship to cap off a historic season. The Western Texas men’s basketball team topped Kentucky 72–65 to win the national title, the first time it was accomplished with an all-Black starting lineup. That season was the basis for the 2007 movie “Glory Road.”

1972: A huge margin of victory. The Lakers crushed Golden State 162–99. Gail Goodrich led Los Angeles with 30 points.

1991: An impressive mark. St. Louis’ Brett Hull became the third player in NHL history to tally 80 goals in a season. He ended up with 86 goals that season.

Happy birthday today to… Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, who’s 68. Former Denver Nuggets point guard Andre Miller is 50. WWE superstar AJ Lee is 39, and former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw is 38.
