Prescott National Forest crews will soon clean up the abandoned Gold Bullion Mine near Cherry. Forest Service officials say work is scheduled to start the week of April 27th.
The site once produced gold, but operations ended there before the 1940s. Since then, mine waste has moved offsite, hurting watershed quality and creating possible risks to people and wildlife. Crews will remove contaminated material to a specially engineered repository, close hazardous mine features, and install erosion control measures with seeding for long-term stability.
Motorists and visitors should expect heavy equipment near Federal Mine Road and National Forest Road 132.
