Man in 70s Arrested for Driving the Wrong Way on HWY 69

A Yavapai County Sheriff’s deputy put himself in harm’s way last Thursday to stop a wrong-way driver on Highway 69 near Dewey-Humboldt.

Just after noon, the deputy spotted a vehicle heading the wrong direction and — recognizing the driver showed no signs of stopping — positioned his patrol car directly in the driver’s path.

The driver eventually slowed after noticing emergency lights and sirens, but did not fully stop. He bumped into the deputy’s patrol car at approximately five miles per hour.

Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers arrived and took over the investigation. Following a DUI evaluation, they arrested the driver — a man in his late seventies. No injuries were reported.
