1901: One game with two notable feats. In the White Sox/Tigers contest, Chicago’s Herm McFarland hit the first grand slam in American League history. Also in that game, Detroit committed 12 errors, aiding the Chicox in their 19–9 victory.
1988: He hit the half-century mark again. After scoring 50 points in Game One of the first round of the NBA Eastern Conference playoffs, Chicago’s Michael Jordan put up 55 points in a 106–101 win over Cleveland. That was the first time a player had back-to-back games with 50-plus points.
1991: One day, two milestones. Oakland’s Rickey Henderson became MLB’s new stolen base king with his 939th career swipe. Also that day, Texas’ Nolan Ryan tossed his seventh career no-hitter, doing it at age 44.
Time to wish a happy birthday today to… former Phoenix Suns small forward Eddie Johnson, who’s 67. New York Jets Hall of Fame receiver Curtis Martin is 53. Former New England Patriots receiver Wes Welker is 45. Pro wrestler Joe Hendry is 38, and Toronto Maple Leafs center William Nylander is 30.
