This Day in Sports History, May 13th

1952: The fielders could have taken the day off. Pirates prospect Ron Necciai of the Class D Bristol Twins struck out 27 from the Welch Minors. Only four Minors reached base in a 7-0 no-hit win for Necciai and the Twins.

1958: A milestone for the man. St. Louis’ Stan Musial cranked out the 3,000th hit of his career. By the time he retired in 1963, Musial had collected 3,630 hits.

1976: The last hurrah for this league. The final ABA championship took place. The New York Nets topped the Denver Nuggets 112-106 to win the title in six games.

Birthdays in the sports world today . . . Detroit Pistons Hall of Fame small forward Dennis Rodman is 65. Former Denver Broncos center Tom Nalen is 55. Former Oakland A’s pitcher Barry Zito and former Sacramento Kings point guard – and U-of-A product Mike Bibby are both 48. Ex-New Jersey Devils center Travis Zajac is 41. Former Arizona Cardinals safety Tyrann Mathieu, Boston Red Sox catcher Willson Contreras, and Vegas Golden Knights winger Mark Stone are all 34.
