This Day in Sports History, May 19th

1974: They were the first expansion team to win it all. Bernie Parent stopped all 30 shots he faced to give Philadelphia the 1-0 win over Boston in Game Six of the Stanley Cup Finals. The Flyers secured their first Cup seven years after entering the league.

1984: One dynasty ended, and another began. The New York Islanders, winners of the last four Stanley Cups, fell to Edmonton 5-2 in Game Five of the Finals. It was the first of five Cup wins that decade for the Oilers.

2008: It hadn’t been done for a half-century. Boston’s Jon Lester threw a no-hitter against Kansas City, beating them 7-0. It was the first time a Red Sox pitcher tossed a no-no in 50 years.

Who’s celebrating a birthday in the sports world today? How about former Detroit Pistons center Bill Laimbeer, who’s 69. Ex-Washington Redskins linebacker London Fletcher is 51. Minnesota Timberwolves Hall of Fame power forward Kevin Garnett is 50, and Winnipeg Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck is 33.
