This Day in Sports History, June 3rd

1933: One game, two big innings. Philadelphia scored eleven runs in the 3rd inning, then the Yankees put up ten runs in the 5th inning. New York went on to win the game 17-11.

1978: Davey went deep big time. Philadelphia’s Davey Johnson hit a pinch-hit grand slam in a 5-1 victory over the Dodgers. He also did the same thing on April 30th, making him the first big leaguer to have two pinch-hit grand slams in one season.

1987: A grand day in baseball. The Cubs and Astros combined for three grand slams in one game. Chicago’s slams came from Brian Dayett and Keith Moreland, while Houston had a slam from Yavapai College product Billy Hatcher in a 22-7 Cubs victory.
