1965: A Sun Devil was the first one picked. ASU outfielder Rick Monday was taken by the Kansas City A’s as the overall number one selection in the first Major League Draft. Monday played 19 years in the majors, mainly for the Cubs and Dodgers, and put up 241 home runs and 775 RBIs.
1968: An incredible streak ended. The Dodgers’ Don Drysdale’s then-record-setting streak of scoreless innings ended at 58 in a 5-3 win over Philadelphia. That mark would stand for 20 years until it was broken by another Dodger, Orel Hershiser.
1986: Another championship banner for this franchise. Boston derailed Houston 114-97 in Game Six of the NBA Finals. It was the Celtics’ 16th title in their history.
Birthdays in the sports world today . . . Former Winnipeg Jets center Thomas Steen is 66. Ex-Philadelphia Eagles defensive back Troy Vincent is 56, and Chicago Bulls shooting guard Anfernee Simons is 27.
