The EPA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have developed a cleanup plan for the Iron King Mine/Humboldt Smelter Superfund site in Dewey-Humboldt. The next step is to secure a contractor for the cleanup effort. There are millions of tons of tailings, contaminated soil, and smelter wastes that need to be removed.
Residential soil sampling still continues in Dewey-Humboldt. So far, soil has been collected from 123 properties. The sampling will allow the EPA to determine where cleanups are necessary.
