Members of the Prescott badminton team put in a solid showing at the state singles and doubles tournaments Friday and Saturday at Glendale’s Independence High School. Number five-ranked Reese Sorensen had a tough first match of the day, going into a third-set tiebreaker to beat Greenway’s Chelsea Brand. She also had a good battle with Independence’s Alexis Gallardo, beating her in two sets, 21-12 and 21-19. Sorensen, however, fell to Arizona College Prep’s Sumedha Balwadgi, 21-10 and 21-16, in the singles quarterfinals.
In state doubles, number four-ranked Claire Long and Annabelle Courtney won their first two matches in two sets, then lost in the quarterfinals to Jing Lui and Abby Iyer. The duo of Ashlynn Reed and Abigail Daniels also qualified for state but lost in the first round.
Prescott now prepares for the state team tournament. They host Combs today in the first round.
