It was one busy weekend for Yavapai College sports, with one of the big highlights being a shot at the Region One title. The men’s soccer team was in Yuma on Saturday to face Arizona Western. It was a tough battle between both sides, with neither able to find the back of the net . . . until the Matadors converted on a penalty kick in the second half. That was the only score of the game, giving Western the 1-0 win and the region title.
On Friday, basketball season began for Yavapai. The men tipped off against number 12 College of Southern Idaho and had a rough time, losing 95-61. Kevin Rucker, Junior, and Martin De Laporterie each tallied eleven points. YC had better luck Saturday as they thrashed Community Christian 98-58. De Laporterie garnered 23 points. Prescott grad Jason Parent recorded eight points and three rebounds.
The Yavapai women’s basketball team had a successful season opener Friday with a 60-44 triumph over Navajo Tech. No stats were available prior to airtime.
