Scammers hit Yavapai County hard over the weekend.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the scammers claimed to be from a bank security office and informed their victims that their account had been compromised and they needed to withdraw their money to put into a new account. One victim sent money to the scammers using Bitcoin, while another scammer showed up at a victim’s home to obtain the money.
In all, four county residents were bilked out of a total of $100,000. One potential victim almost sent the scammers thousands of dollars, but a bank teller became suspicious and stopped the transaction.
The Sheriff’s Office advises that if you suspect a scammer is calling you, hang up the phone. You can also go to your bank in person to verify any issues with your account. If you believe you are the victim of a scam, call the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office at 928-771-3260.
