“No one should be above the rules of the road.” That’s what Prescott area Representative Quang Nguyen said regarding a bill he introduced that would eliminate legislative immunity for Arizona legislators for traffic violations.
Under current state law, legislators have immunity from arrest for all cases while the state legislature is in session. The exceptions to this are treason, felonies, and breaches of the peace.
In a statement from his office, Nguyen said, “The people we serve are expected to follow traffic laws, and legislators should be no different.”
If this bill is approved, it will go to the ballot for voters to decide in the next general election.
