Former YC Basketball Player Coaching in the NCAA Tournament

While there is no NCAA Division I school in the Tri-City area, there will be some local flavor in the national tournament on the women’s side. High Point University made it to the First Four of the tournament, and leading them from the bench is Chelsea Banbury, formerly Chelea Dermyer. She played for Yavapai College from 2003-2005, averaging 8.7 points per game during her career, and was an All-Conference First Team selection.

Following her time at YC, Banbury spent two seasons playing for Florida Gulf Coast University and was on their 2006-2007 team that finished as national runners-up in NCAA Division II.

Banbury has been the head coach for High Point since 2019 and led the Lady Panthers to a 21-11 record and the Big South Conference Championship this season. High Point faces William and Mary in the First Four tomorrow.
