A woman lost $50,000 to a phone scammer posing as an Apple representative. This incident occurred last Friday in Prescott.
The suspect claimed she faced arrest over a fraudulent account charge and instructed her to lie to her bank to withdraw the money.
The victim was then told to hand over the cash in person. A man driving a Toyota sedan arrived, and she placed the money in his trunk.
Hours later, she realized she’d been scammed and called the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies searched the area but did not locate the vehicle.
Officials warn that fraud is on the rise in 2025, including cases involving cryptocurrency and home pickups.
Remember—law enforcement will never demand payment this way. If you suspect a scam, call the Sheriff’s Office at 928-771-3260.
