For years, many drivers have shied away from traveling to and from the Phoenix area on I-17 during a holiday weekend because of highway backups and congestion.
If you were considering traveling on I-17 to the Phoenix area for the Memorial Day weekend, then the Arizona Department of Transportation has a surprise for you.
ADOT will mark the beginning of the summer travel season with the opening of new travel lanes in both directions of Interstate 17 between Anthem Way and Black Canyon City, ahead of the holiday weekend.
The new lanes are part of the I-17 Improvement Project. It’s slated for completion by the end of the year, when ADOT will open its flex lanes which will reduce travel times during high-volume traffic conditions.
