Prescott, Bradshaw Mountain, and Chino Valley baseball players, coaches, and fans will see something different on the field starting in 2027 — not one, but two first bases. The National Federation of State High School Associations announced that a double first base will be required in all high school baseball games nationwide.
The rule change is designed to reduce collisions between runners and fielders at first base. The double base will feature a white half in fair territory and a colored half in foul territory — with no space in between.
NFHS Sports Director Elliot Hopkins says the move marks an evolution in the sport, addressing running lane violations while prioritizing player safety.
The double base rule was one of ten changes approved for the 2027 rule book, all aimed at improving safety and game integrity for young athletes across the country.
