The week began with lots of basketball being played in Camp Verde. That was the site of the Yvonne Johnson Memorial Shootout Monday, and three of our local teams took part in it.
The Chino Valley boys split their games, defeating Ash Fork in the opener 46-31, then falling to Kingman Academy later in the day 52-36. Alex Gomez and Isaac Martinez led the Cougar offense on the day. Their point totals were unavailable prior to airtime.
Both of Mayer’s teams also took part in the tournament. The boys dropped both of their games, 66-22 to Valley and 56-43 to Willcox. The Mayer girls also suffered two losses, 55-14 to Scottsdale Prep and 107-10 to Valley.
The Yvonne Johnson Memorial Shootout continues today. Another big basketball tournament also takes place in Yavapai County this week, as Prescott High School hosts the Lady Badger Winter Classic Friday and Saturday.
